Utah Grizzlies hire former Thunder coach

Tuesday, May 25, 1999 | 10:44 a.m.

The Utah Grizzlies exchanged one former New York Islanders great for another Monday, hiring former Las Vegas Thunder coach Bob Bourne to replace Butch Goring as the team's coach and general manager.

Bourne is just the International Hockey League team's second coach-GM in its history. Goring, who was hired as head coach of the Islanders two weeks ago, led the Grizzlies to two Turner Cup championships during his five years with the organization.

Bourne and Goring were teammates on the Islanders teams that won four consecutive Stanley Cups during the 1980s. Bourne served as Goring's assistant coach with the IHL's Thunder in 1993-94, and again during the 1997-98 season in Utah.
