Teachers call for business-tax boost

Tuesday, May 25, 1999 | 12:01 p.m.

Nevada's teachers union on Monday called on state businesses to pay more in taxes to benefit education.

Leaders of the 21,000-member Nevada State Education Association held press conferences in both Carson City and in Las Vegas to announce a plan to start a ballot drive to implement a 5 percent tax on business profits.

The tax would generate an estimated $150 million a year for Nevada schools. Association leaders want higher teachers salaries and more classroom supplies and teacher training, although individual districts would determine where the money is spent.

Association leaders in Las Vegas said the state's current tax structure does not support schools, especially in its two fastest-growing districts, Washoe and Clark counties.
