Alcorn named veterans commissioner

Tuesday, May 25, 1999 | 1:01 a.m.

CARSON CITY -- Ray Alcorn, a former Navy pilot who spent seven years as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam, today was named state veteran affairs commissioner by Gov. Kenny Guinn.

Alcorn succeeds Chuck Abbott who resigned earlier this year from the $46,000-a-year job.

Alcorn, 59, who begins work June 1, formerly was commanding officer of the Naval Air Station in Fallon.

He became a naval aviator in 1963 and was shot down over North Vietnam two years later.

He was held prisoner until 1973.

After his release, he served as chief of staff of the Naval Air Training Command in Corpus Christi, Texas, and then as commanding officer of the Fallon base.

"I think having Ray Alcorn in charge of veterans' affairs is something all of Nevada's veterans can celebrate today," Guinn said.
