Internet kiosks coming to LV hotels

Monday, May 24, 1999 | 11:55 a.m.

Jones Naughton, through its Community Marquee division, plans to install 1,200 kiosks over the next five years in hotels in Southern California, Arizona and Nevada. NICOM, which owns more than 100 pay telephones in western U.S. hotels, has worked in the past with the Days Inn and Ramada hotel franchises.

John Winfield, president of NICOM, said the kiosks, which occupy a 3-by-5-foot space, are being targeted for low-end hotel and motel chains to compete with large companies that have in-room Internet access. NICOM's sales force will approach properties in Las Vegas, Laughlin and the Lake Tahoe area and offer percentage-of-revenue contracts.

Winfield said it is uncertain how many kiosks will be located in Las Vegas since NICOM will market them throughout the West until 1,200 are placed.

Internet-access kiosks give users the ability to retrieve e-mail, transfer files and download information remotely. Users don't need a laptop computer to get on line through the devices.
