Assembly leader diagnosed with ovarian cancer

Monday, May 24, 1999 | 3:49 a.m.

Evans, 61, remains in Washoe Medical Center for post-surgery recovery. Once released, she'll get follow-up treatments for the cancer.

When lawmakers aren't in session, Evans works at the University of Nevada School of Medicine in Reno. Kathleen Conaboy, assistant dean of the medical school, announced the diagnosis.

Conaboy said Evans expressed gratitude for calls and cards, and also asked that, in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to the school's library building fund.

Evans has been absent from the Legislature since May 11. While she hasn't been seeing visitors, she has been keeping in touch by telephone as the session winds toward its conclusion at the end of the month.

Evans is the highest-ranking woman in the Assembly and the third in line in Democratic leadership.

Her absence comes at a crucial time, as legislative budget panels resolve differences on education spending and social service programs. She has played a lead role in those areas for the Democrats against Republican Gov. Kenny Guinn and the GOP-controlled Senate.
