TUCSON, Ariz. -- The top-ranked UNLV golf team is in a second-place tie after the first round of play at the 1999 NCAA West Regional Men's Golf Championships, held Thursday at the par-72, 7,025-yard Tucson National Golf Resort.
Arizona State shot a five-under 283 to grab the lead after 18 holes of play. UNLV and Brigham Young both fired 288 to put them in a second-place tie. Fresno State is in fourth at 290, while Washington rounds out the top five at 291.
"We stayed with our game plan today," said UNLV coach Dwaine Knight. "Staying with our plan will be very critical and it is something that we are trying to accomplish. I thought we played hard and gave a good effort today, but we just didn't finish like we are capable of."
Individually, Brigham Young's Jose Garrido is in the lead after shooting a 4-under 68. UNLV's Charley Hoffman, Michael Kirk and Adam Scott all shot 1-under 71s to lead the Rebels and are in a six-way tie for eighth place.
Other Rebels competing were Jeremy Anderson (T48th/75) and Chris Berry (T53rd/76).
The tournament will continue with 18 holes today and conclude with 18 holes on Saturday.
