Turnout low for candidate forum

Thursday, May 20, 1999 | 11:41 a.m.

Six North Las Vegas City Council hopefuls were at a Wednesday candidates forum at Swainston Middle School, but the city's voters were not.

Only 19 people showed up at the forum to hear what the candidates had to say before today's revote by precincts 4005 and 4008 because of irregularities in the May 4 primary election.

"People in our community don't take their responsibilities seriously, and that is proven out by the low voter turnout," candidate Ron Long said.

Long lost the fourth spot on the June 8 general election by only two votes to Marcia Blake.

Blake's campaign scheduled the forum, and candidates Chris Montanez, Linda Hinson, Laura Perkins and Stan Vaughn joined Blake and Long at the forum.

The positions of incumbents William Robinson and Paula Brown, who received the top two number of votes, respectively, are not threatened by the revote. Planning commissioner Shari Buck also won in the primary.

Polls opened today at 7 a.m. and will close at 7 p.m. Those in precinct 4005 can vote at Cheyenne High School, 3200 W. Alexander Road, while precinct 4008's voters can go to Lincoln Elementary School, 3010 Berg St.
