Stalking bill passes Senate

Thursday, May 20, 1999 | 11:03 a.m.

CARSON CITY -- The Senate Wednesday approved an anti-stalking bill pushed by comedian Jerry Lewis.

Assembly Bill 363 now goes back to the Assembly for approval of a Senate amendment.

The bill by Assemblywoman Sheila Leslie, D-Reno, would increase the maximum penalty for aggravated stalking from six to 15 years in prison.

There are 23 people in Nevada prisons for stalking. That includes the man who terrorized Lewis' family before he was sent to prison for aggravated stalking.

Lewis urged the Assembly in March to increase penalties, saying the 15-year penalty isn't enough to deter would-be stalkers. He asked for 25 years.

To help law enforcement understand the severity of the crime, Leslie's bill would also mandate that officers get additional training to learn how to better respond to stalking calls.
