High school students win honors for journalism accomplishments

CLASS! Publications and the Las Vegas Sun recently co-sponsored journalism awards for area high schools.
The program was conducted in cooperation with the UNLV College of Extended Studies and the Hank Greenspun School of Communication.
The winners were:
News writing: first, Lauren Berrigan of Green Valley High School; second, Catherine Lu, Durango High School; third, Cassandra Palanza and Ryan Ferguson, Las Vegas High School; and honorable mention, Rachel Renfrow of Eldorado High School and Jorge Perea, Bishop Gorman High School.
Editorial writing: first, Priya Batra, The Meadows School; second, Christina DiBella, Silverado High School; third, Stephanie Hicks and Lisa Kim, Durango; and honorable mention, Ryan Ferguson of Green Valley, and Carla Graf of Basic High School.
Entertainment reviews: first, Adria Hash, Basic; second, Tina Griego, Las Vegas; third, Alicia Heidbreder, Valley High School; and honorable mention, Matt Medcalf of Durango, and Juan Robles of Horizon High School West.
Sports writing: first, Joshua Wilcox, The Meadows; second, Catherine Lu, Durango; third, Tony Tolliver, Basic; and honorable mention, Jay Schuminsky of Bishop Gorman and Abby Miller of Green Valley.
Sports photography: first, Georgia Bayiatis, Durango; second, Diana Bernard, Green Valley; third, Sarene McKeehan, Basic; and honorable mention, John Lopez of Eldorado and Mike Orsburn of Silverado.
Feature/news photography: first, Angela Coury, Bishop Gorman; second, Kristina Shaw, Eldorado; third, Tiffany Reardon, Basic; and honorable mention, Anna Elmo of Palo Verde High School and Elizabeth Cicco of Las Vegas Academy.
Art/illustrations: first, Nicole Kolenic, Durango; second, Mike Shubbuck, Bishop Gorman; third, May Washington, The Meadows; and honorable mention, Staci Garner of Silverado and Dustin Skoff of Green Valley.
Feature writing: first, Shima Hosseini, Horizon High School West; second, Carla Graf and Jenalyn McCall, Basic; third, Lauren Berrigan, Green Valley; and honorable mention, Sarah De Hart of Durango and Kristina Shaw of Eldorado.
Layout: first, Durango; second, Las Vegas Academy; third, Green Valley; and honorable mention, Basic and Horizon High School West.
Special awards were presented to journalism teachers Susan Jensen of Cheyenne High School, Bill Tobler of Basic, Daphne Grabovoi of Silverado and Karen Vaughan of Valley.
An award for "extraordinary service" was presented to Valley student Alicia Heidbreder for her work with CLASS!
CLASS! Publications is a monthly newspaper written by and for Clark County high school students.
