Nevada educators honored

Nine Clark County educators have been honored this week for their work.

Basic High School Principal Horace Smith was named Nevada secondary principal of the year 1999-2000.

Smith, a Texas native, graduated from Las Vegas High School and has been an educator for 30 years. He started as a hall monitor at Western High School and has been principal at Basic, in Henderson, for five years.

Six rookie teachers received Clark County School District's New Teacher of the Year Award. They were selected from a field of about 2,000 educators in their first year with the district. Winners will be recognized at the May 13 School Board meeting.

The recipients:

* Stephanie Gauchat, a math and science special education teacher at Jim Bridger Middle School in North Las Vegas.

* Nicole Lehman, a fourth-grade teacher at Robert Taylor Elementary School in Henderson.

* Robyn Lemon, a band teacher at Mike O'Callaghan Middle School.

* Gregg Lipkin, a seventh-grade English teacher at Mahlon Brown Middle School in Henderson.

* Lisa Matthews, an algebra and probability and statistics teacher at Silverado High School.

* Melissa Rose, a first-grade teacher at Manuel Cortez Elementary School.

Sharon Dee Pearson, a science teacher at Dorothy Eisenberg Elementary School and Candace Yamagata, a math teacher at Hyde Park Middle School were among 208 teachers nationwide recently honored with the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. They will be honored in Washington D.C. in June.
