Stopping violence among kids topic of meeting

A community forum, Stopping Violence Among Children, will be held 7:45-9 p.m. Thursday at the Las Vegas Convention Center Ballroom.

Gary Waddell and Paula Francis of KLAS Channel 8 will moderate. A panel of community experts, including educators, social workers, psychologists, law enforcement representatives and civic leaders, will be on hand to explore ways to help our students feel safe. Call 799-8440.

Meeting scheduled on LV historic preserve

Developers of the planned Las Vegas Springs Preserve have scheduled a public workshop 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the Las Vegas Valley Water District, 1001 S. Valley View Blvd.

The forum will allow residents to help design the cultural and environmental preserve, slated to open in 2005 for Las Vegas' centennial. Call 258-7145.

Awards banquet set Sunday at UNLV

The 14th Outstanding Students Awards Banquet hosted by the UNLV Alliance of Professionals of African Heritage is set for 4 p.m. Sunday in the Moyer Student Union Ballroom.

The event is open to the public. Tickets are $10.

Gaming executive Boyd to be honored

The Boy Scouts of America, Boulder Dam Area Council, will honor longtime Nevada attorney and gaming executive William Boyd with the 1999 Good Scout Award at its annual Good Scout Award Luncheon noon Thursday at the Stardust hotel-casino.

Gov. Kenny Guinn will be master of ceremonies. Tickets are $150. Call 736-4366.

Vehicle numbers can be placed on windows

Free VIN-etching on car windows will be provided to the public from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at the Sears parking lot in the Boulevard mall, 3528 S. Maryland Parkway.

The program, which places the vehicle identification number in plain sight, is being sponsored by Allstate Insurance Co., Safelite Auto Glass, Metro Police and the Southern Nevada Auto Recovery Effort. Call Allstate at (602) 631-6384 for more information.

Awareness day planned at Sammy Davis Plaza

Southern Nevada Center for Independent Living will host Disability Awareness Day 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at the Sammy Davis Jr. Outdoor Festival Plaza in Lorenzi Park.

More than 60 organizations will provide information on adaptive equipment, transportation, housing, legal service, benefits and the Americans With Disabilities Act. Call 649-3822.
