Stars blow early lead, lose 8-6 on the road

Monday, May 3, 1999 | 11:21 a.m.

EDMONTON -- It's becoming an all-too-familiar scenario for the Las Vegas Stars.

Jump out to an early lead and then watch hopelessly as the bullpen blows it down the stretch.

For the fourth time in a week, the Stars and the bullpen collapsed Sunday afternoon at Telus Field as Edmonton rallied for a 8-6 victory.

Las Vegas, thanks in part to third baseman Ed Giovanola's second home run of the season, built up a 5-0 lead after five innings.

But starter Jose Mercedes tired in the sixth, surrendering three runs.

Still, Las Vegas (10-14) held a 6-3 lead entering the bottom of the seventh when reliever Matt Whiteside took over.

Whiteside was then hammered for seven hits and five earned runs over the next two innings en route to his second loss against no wins this season.

Steve Decker hit his 10th home run of the season for Edmonton (12-12), including his fifth in six games against Las Vegas. First baseman Chris Pritchett and catcher Brett Hemphill also homered for the Trappers.

The series resumes tonight at 6:05 p.m.
