The victim, whose name was not released pending notification of relatives, died at Desert Springs Hospital shortly after the 10 a.m. accident.
Witnesses told police the victim's car was traveling westbound in the left lane when the vehicle sideswiped a tractor-trailer that was in the center lane.
The victim's car then veered into the eastbound travel lanes and hit three more cars before it struck a light pole and came to a stop.
Police said the victim may have suffered a heart attack or had complications from a medical condition.
The accident is still under investigation.
