Snow snarls western Nevada, Sierra

Wednesday, March 31, 1999 | 9:36 a.m.

March went out with a roar today in western Nevada and the Sierra.

An early spring storm dumped up to 2 feet of snow in the mountains and 2-3 inches in the U.S. 395 corridor along the Sierra from Reno south through Minden.

Roads were passable in the mountains, but chains or snow tires were required.

Chains were mandatory on the California side of Interstate-80 over Donner Summit and U.S. 50 was closed over Echo Summit in California through midmorning for avalanche control.

Chains or snow tires were required in the valleys as well, where treacherous roads produced numerous accidents, including rollovers. The 10-minute drive through Washoe Valley north of Carson City took an hour, with spinouts littering the median.

Boreal Ski Area received 24 inches of snow overnight, Kirkwood got 24-28 inches, Alpine Meadows reported 14-21 inches and Mount Rose, 8-10 inches.

A couple of inches fell along Lake Tahoe's south shore, with a foot or so at the north shore, delaying the start of Incline Village schools by an hour.

A chance of snow showers was to continue through tonight in the mountains and across the northern part of the state with scattered showers in the mountains on Thursday.
