Letter: Casinos should give more back to city
Wednesday, March 31, 1999 | 11:57 a.m.
Yet, here at home in Nevada, Gov. Kenny Guinn is trying to erase a $141 million shortfall by cutting existing human services programs and not financing new requests for needs caused directly by the gambling industry's self-propelled need to procreate.
While acknowledging the benefits the gambling establishment contributes to the state in providing jobs to many hard-working casino employees, isn't it also true they are directly responsible for Las Vegas' existing growth factor?
They return a "reasonable" part of the tremendous profits they make by continuing to build billion-dollar megaresorts and placing neighborhood casinos on every vacant lot in the valley for the "human" sector.
You know, that sector which encompasses "entities" we refer to as men, women, families, teenagers, seniors, and others who simply want clean air to inhale, good water to drink and safe roads to travel on.
They also want gambling CEOs and legislators who actually believe the worth of a human being is greater than the creation of another casino to play another slot machine to make another dollar.
