Gators stay in hunt

Defending champion Green Valley won its second game in as many tries at this year's Lions Club Easter Prep Baseball Tournament Tuesday in San Diego, downing Palo Verde (Ariz.) 10-7 in nine innings.
The Gators (10-3) scored three runs in the top of the ninth, with Billy Schmitt's two-run single the big blow. Garrett Guzman went 4-for-6 with a triple for Green Valley, while teammate Kyle Reed was 2-for-4 with a pair of homers.
Green Valley will take on Monte Vista (Calif.) today with the winner advancing to Thursday's semifinals.
In other Lions Club action Tuesday, Cimarron fell to 0-2 in the tournament, losing 11-5 to Santana (Calif.). Silverado lost for the first time in the San Diego event, dropping a 10-2 decision to La Costa Canyon (Calif.).
* Billy Barker pitched UNLV to a 7-4 win at Hawaii Pacific. Ryan Ludwick hit his seventh home run.
