Elections office extends hours

Wednesday, March 31, 1999 | 11:03 a.m.

The Clark County elections office is extending its hours to accommodate voters who must meet the Saturday deadline to register for the municipal primary election in May.

Newly appointed Registrar of Voters Larry Lomax said his office will be open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. today through Saturday.

County elections officials will also register voters Saturday at the Meadows, Galleria at Sunset, Boulevard and Belz factory outlet malls.

Included on the June 8 general election ballot will be the race for Las Vegas mayor and two City Council seats. Three Henderson City Council seats are up and two are open in North Las Vegas. In Boulder City, there is a race for mayor and two positions on the City Council. Also, there is one seat open on the Henderson Municipal Court and four open on the Las Vegas Municipal Court.

While candidates are busy campaigning and voters are studying platforms, Clark County is preparing for its first election using its new voting machines without former Registrar of Voters Kathryn Ferguson, who introduced the technology.

Ferguson left for a new job in California after the county's first flawless election using the machines last November.

Lomax said other than Ferguson, the elections staff that has experience with the new computers remains with the county. He said the municipal elections will be good practice for the staff because the turnout is significantly smaller than in federal elections.

"Other than Kathryn, we have the same crew who put on the last election," Lomax said. "We may be working a little harder, but we'll be all right."
