Police block off street when materials found in motel room

Monday, March 29, 1999 | 11:07 a.m.

Frank Alexander faces eight counts of possession with intent to manufacture an explosive device, according to Las Vegas Metropolitan Police spokesman Steve Meriwether.

Meriwether declined to say what materials were found that led to the charges.

"We can't discuss that because it's part of the investigation," Meriwether said Monday. "What was found had the potential to cause serious damage and injury."

Meriwether said the man was staying at the Budget Inn on the edge of the downtown area and was talking to a mental health agency about using explosives.

Police found the man on a pay phone outside the motel and he allowed them to search his room.

Officers secured the room, evacuated some 200 people from half a dozen businesses and called the Las Vegas Fire Deparment Bomb Squad.

Main Street, from Carson south to Lewis, was closed for approximately five hours while the bomb squad investigated the scene.
