Letter: Rich don’t need surplus from cut

Friday, March 26, 1999 | 12:11 p.m.

They pointed out that the Democrats want to use 15 percent of the surplus to save Medicare, while the Republicans want to use the money for tax cuts for the rich.

As a native North Dakotan, I was proud to see that the leading Congressional speakers boosting the Democratic plan were Midwesterners.

They were Sens. Tom Daschle and Tim Johnson from South Dakota; Sen. Byron Dorgan from North Dakota; and Rep. Richard Gephardt from Missouri.

The rich don't need the surplus tax cut money, but the Medicare and Social Security programs need monetary support, especially for the millions of nonrich on these programs.
