Support shown for smoking bill

Monday, March 22, 1999 | 11:16 a.m.

State health officials, numerous professional organizations and concerned citizens turned out in force this morning in Las Vegas and Carson City to support legislation that would give local governments control over regulating smoking in public places.

Clark County Commissioner Erin Kenny, who also is a member of the Clark County Board of Health, led the charge in Las Vegas.

Citing health district numbers, she told the state Assembly's Judiciary Committee that $800 million was spent in Nevada for smoking-related illness in 1998. One in four deaths in the state have been attributed to smoking, she said.

About 50 students from Durango, Cimarron-Memorial, Clark and Bonanza high schools turned out to support Assembly Bill 331, which would authorize state agencies and local governments to adopt restrictions on tobacco that are more stringent than the state's current regulations.
