Judge rules against Silver State workers

Sunday, March 21, 1999 | 9:16 a.m.

Teamsters Local 631, which represents about 1,200 workers at Silver State, has called for an informational meeting Sunday at the union hall to address the issue of subcontracting more than 60 truck-driving jobs from Silver State's transfer department.

Derek Cardwell, vice president of Local 631, said the possibility of members voting for a strike is "wide open."

A condition of Friday's court order is that the outsourcing of the department not be implemented until the disputed issue is presented to an arbitrator, as mandated by the collective bargaining agreement between Silver State and the Teamsters.

A Silver State spokeswoman has said the decision to subcontract the transfer department jobs to Specialty Transportation Services is final, and that workers with seniority can "bump" those with less seniority from their jobs in other divisions.

"This ruling will protect the 1,200 dedicated, hard-working union employees and their families from the hardships associated with a strike," said Steve Kalish, president and chief executive of Silver State.
