Miss World Pageant eyes LV resorts

Friday, March 12, 1999 | 11:50 a.m.

Mimosa Jones, president of the non-profit Entertainment Development Corp., said today administrators of the organization that run the pageant have settled on Las Vegas as the site, but haven't selected a hotel headquarters. Jones said the company has been negotiating with the MGM Grand and is also looking at the Mandalay Bay and soon-to-open Venetian properties as potential hosts.

In addition to the Miss World event, Las Vegas would be home to the Miss World-USA, the preliminary event that crowns the United States' entry in the big pageant.

Jones said the primary benefit to Las Vegas would be the worldwide exposure the event generates. About 16,000 people would travel to the city as participants or organizers.

"The visitor numbers are less significant than the media and television exposure," said Jones.
