New fee charged at Walker Lake campground

Thursday, March 11, 1999 | 2:47 a.m.

The recreation area is only the second in Nevada to be selected as a BLM fee demonstration site, where all proceeds are returned directly to the site.

"User fees will be put back into the campground, providing for maintenance and improvement in the future," said Jim Singlaub, manager of the BLM's field office in Carson City.

A similar project at the Red Rock complex outside Las Vegas has raised more than $1 million over the past year, BLM spokesman Bob Stewart said.

But "we're not expecting big money" at Walker Lake, he said.

"We've had no significant opposition" to the fees, primarily because the money is returned directly to the site where it is raised, Stewart said.

Users of primitive sites at Sportsman's Beach will be charged $4 per night per vehicle, or $22 for the week.

Fees for the developed campsites will be $6 per night or $35 for the week.

Fee payments will be on the honor system at this time, Singlaub said.
