Ford of Detroit, an attorney for 46 years, sat on the Recorder's Court bench until it was merged with the Wayne County Circuit Court. Ford, the first black woman judge in Michigan, retired last December.
Gov. John Engler announced the appointment Thursday. Ford replaces the Rev. Jim Holley, who resigned in December. Her term will expire Dec. 31, 2000.
