Authorities investigate shooting of dog
Thursday, March 11, 1999 | 10:03 a.m.
Sgt. Lance Modispacher said the officer was trying to locate the owner of an abandoned vehicle Wednesday just off Kingsbury Grade in Stateline when two large dogs charged at him.
The officer started backpedalling but the dogs - a pit bull and a Rottweiler mix - came at him.
The officer pulled his hand gun and shot the 120-pound Rottweiler in the front shoulder.
The dog's owner, Jim Handlin, took the wounded animal to a veterinarian, where it was treated for a flesh wound.
State law allows any person to defend themselves from a dog attack without fear of liability.
The incident was under review by sheriff's detectives and an investigator with the District Attorney's office.
