Stupak’s home damaged by blaze

Fire investigators have yet to determine what caused a bedroom in Bob Stupak's home to go up in flames Monday. The fire caused an estimated $100,000 in damage.
Stupak, the former Stratosphere Corp. chairman and Vegas World owner, was battling the flames with a garden hose when Las Vegas firefighters arrived at his Rancho Circle address about 9:25 a.m. and quickly extinguished the blaze, said Tim Szymanski, department spokesman.
"Stupak was home when the fire started," Szymanski said. "He was in the kitchen and noticed the house filling with smoke. When he went to investigate, he found the bedroom on fire."
The single-story home's wood-shake shingles initially prompted firefighters to raise the emergency to second-alarm status, but Szymanski said the roof never caught fire. Fire damage was confined to the bedroom. The rest of the home was damaged by smoke, Szymanski said.
