The Reno-Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority said room taxes for the month totaled nearly $1.6 million, up 9.7 percent from the same month a year ago.
The room tax collection is the highest ever for the month of January, the agency said.
Tourism officials credit good skiing in the Sierra, favorable traveling weather and the New Year's Eve and Martin Luther King holiday weekends for the increase in tourism.
Room occupancy in the Reno, Sparks and Lake Tahoe area averaged nearly 61 percent for the month, up 2.5 percent from January 1998, the agency reported.
