Historic springs site to get new name
Monday, March 8, 1999 | 11:10 a.m.
Big Springs, the original source of water for Las Vegas, should have an official name after the Mojave Desert Preserve Board meets.
The board is scheduled to discuss the naming of the 180-acre Big Springs site bounded by U.S. 95 on the north, Alta Drive on the south and Valley View Boulevard on the west.
The meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Tuesday in the Mead Room of the Las Vegas Valley Water District on Valley View Boulevard.
The water district has plans to preserve the oldest occupied site in the valley, known as the Big Springs Archaeological District. The site is already listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Mojave Desert Preserve Board, which includes representatives from the water district, city of Las Vegas, Clark County, the Southern Nevada Water Authority and local citizens, is planning the future of Big Springs. Its first task is to come up with a name for the area that reflects its significance to Las Vegas history.
