Hearing on public records bill delayed

Government Affairs Chairman Doug Bache, D-Las Vegas, said he delayed the hearing on AB213 to wait for a similar bill in the state Senate. He added the hearing could be held next week.

The Assembly bill would allow for public inspection of any information turned up during an investigation of an executive-branch state worker, once the probe is completed.

Kent Lauer of the Nevada Press Association backs the measure but says it's not a media issue. Rather, he says, it's a public right-to-know issue that could help restore peoples' faith in government.

Lauer said during a Government Affairs hearing last week that there's always a possibility such disclosures could embarrass a government employee - "but that doesn't outweigh the need for public accountability."

"Your constituents will tell you that secrecy in government without a strong reason is one of the reasons they're losing faith in government," he told the panel.
