The city's riverfront developer, DDR OliverMcMillan, said a previous plan to turn the Mapes into time-share units would cost more than it is willing to spend. Another group of developers has offered the city 2 (m) million dollars to buy the Mapes and possibly demolish it.
Supporters of the 51-year-old hotel that has stood vacant for 17 years still believe the structure can be saved.
Washoe County has expressed an interest to use the building for office space. County commissioners are expected to discuss the proposal when they meet in July.
The City Council, acting as the Reno Redevelopment Agency, delayed action on the Mapes until Sept. 13 to give staff time to evaluate proposals.
