Officials OK $150 million bond for convention center expansion

The bond will be backed by projected revenues from Clark County's room tax.
"The board's action allows us to move forward with the south hall expansion as requested by our customers and according to the master plan for the Las Vegas Convention Center," said Manny Cortez, president of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.
The expansion will span Desert Inn Road and is expected to open in early 2001. The convention center currently has 1.9 million square feet of space and is the largest single-level exhibition and meeting facility in the county.
The board acted under a new state law that allows Nevada's convention and visitors authorities to issue revenue bonds backed by their own revenues.
Most of the authority's funding comes from a portion of the 9 percent room tax.
Nevada law designates room tax dollars for tourism proportion and construction and maintenance of convention facilities.
