Detroit casino to target high-rollers

DETROIT -- MGM Grand Inc. of Las Vegas is likely to receive its Michigan gaming license July 20 following a regulatory hearing Monday in which the casino operator was praised for abiding by the law in Nevada and for having one of the strongest balance sheets in the industry.
Its temporary Detroit casino should open shortly after receipt of the license next month.
MGM Grand officials, in the meantime, say their permanent Detroit casino opening in 2003 will target high rollers, especially those from Asia.
"We intend to reach beyond the regional market," said John Redmond, vice chairman of MGM Grand Detroit. The Detroit Free Press reported that will mean national entertainers, high-limit gaming areas and private planes ferrying preferred customers to Detroit.
