More funds sought for new teachers

Las Vegas regents Steve Sisolak and Mark Alden intend to push for more money so the state's university system can produce additional teachers for the Clark County School District.
With the fast growth in Southern Nevada, the school district is scrambling to hire new teachers. The problem persists despite extra programs at UNLV and the Community College of Southern Nevada to graduate more potential teachers.
Alden said he wants to go to the Legislative Interim Finance Committee and ask for an emergency appropriation to enlarge these programs.
Sisolak said he will seek to have money from the Board of Regents' discretionary fund allocated for the programs as a one-shot boost, with the 2001 Legislature picking it up after that.
"This is an emergency," he said.
Sisolak said he wants to meet with UNLV President Carol Harter and CCSN President Richard Moore to see how much money is needed and how many teachers may be turned out.
