Judge blocks casino credit card ban

Friday, June 18, 1999 | 11:26 a.m.

DES MOINES, Iowa -- A local judge blocked state gambling regulators from enforcing new rules banning the use of credit cards to get cash advances at Iowa casinos and racetracks, the Des Moines Register reported.

Polk County District Judge Robert Hutchison said Iowa's casino industry is likely to prevail in its lawsuit against the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission.

The Register reported that Hutchison's decision means a court hearing must be held to determine whether the rules should be thrown out. A hearing date has not been set.

Gambling opponents support a ban on cash advances, saying credit cards are heavily used by gambling addicts. Casinos counter they will lose millions of dollars if credit cards are banned.

The Register reported Hutchison noted the Gaming Commission's rule would hurt Iowa tourism, hotels, restaurants and schools.
