Handcuff basketball in cop competition
Metro Police and the Nevada Highway Patrol will compete in several unusual events tonight for charity.
The competitions will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Official All-Star Cafe, 3785 Las Vegas Blvd. South, and will include a doughnut-hole eating contest, handcuff basketball and police and sports trivia.
Proceeds raised from the competition will go to the Police Athletic League and Stop DUI.
Business women's group to hold forum
Southern Nevada Area Council, American Business Women's Association, will hold a Leadership Forum 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at the Holiday Inn at Flamingo and Paradise roads.
A continental breakfast will be included in the reservation fee. Call Sheila Hodges for reservations and additional information at 795-3080.
Annual ball to aid American Cancer Society
The American Cancer Society's second annual Cattle Barons Ball will be 7:30 p.m.-midnight Saturday at the Legends in Concert Arabian Ranch, 8213 Rancho Destino Road.
The Righteous Brothers' Bill Medley, a prostate cancer survivor, and his band will perform at 10:30 p.m. for guests. Tickets can be purchased by calling 798-6877.
Enjoy a different perspective in the park
Here are some of the free walks and hikes coming up at the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. Call 363-1921 for reservations.
First Creek Ramble: -- Discover the magic of a riparian area as water transforms the desert on this 4-mile moderate hike Friday.
Frogs and Toads: A hike Saturday to a spring to look for the desert amphibians. Bring a bug cup. Creatures will be released unharmed at program's end.
Rocky Gap Exploration: Explore a new area off the beaten trail on a 4-mile moderately strenuous hike Saturday. A high-clearance vehicle is recommended.
Why Do They Call It Yuck-a: Learn where some of the funny names of things in the desert come from on this 2-mile moderate hike Sunday to Icebox Canyon. Children 7 and older with adults are welcome.
Geology From a Distance: This 30- to 60-minute no-hike geology program will be held at the accessible nature trail/pavilion area Sunday along State Route 159. Learn about Red Rock's formations and geologic upheavals all at one location.
Early Bird-Desert Adaptations: This a 4-mile moderate roundtrip hike Monday on which the special adaption of both plants and animals of Red Rock Canyon will be discussed. Meet at the Caves parking lot.

Jewish Community Center Day Camp registration is under way for the June 21-Aug. 13 session at the Milton I. Schwartz Hebrew Academy. More than 150 children ages 3 to fifth grade are expected to attend. Call 794-0090.
The Tortoise Group will present local veterinarian Christine Comstetter, who will speak on care and adoption of desert tortoises, at a free slide presentation at 1 p.m. Saturday at Lorenzi Park. Call 739-8043.
The Li-Paz family, internationally renowned singers and veterans of the London stage as well as the world's major opera houses, will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Clark County Library, 1401 E. Flamingo Road. Tickets are $18. Call 435-9435 or 436-4900.
Rex Bell Elementary School will hold its annual Kindergarten Round-Up 8:30 a.m.-noon and 1-3 p.m. Friday at 2900 Wilmington Way to pre-register students for kindergarten for the upcoming school year. Free immunization, hearing and vision screenings will also be available.
The Golden Rainbow, which provides assistance to people with HIV/AIDS in Southern Nevada, will hold the 13th annual Ribbon Of Life performances 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Luxor hotel-casino. Tickets are $25 to $175. Call 384-2899.
