County to spend more than $2 million on habitat project

Wednesday, June 16, 1999 | 10:54 a.m.

The Clark County Commission adopted a draft habitat conservation plan, committing to spend more than $2 million a year to protect about 80 species of plants and animals.

According to the county's comprehensive planning division, the report presented to commissioners Tuesday has been called one of the most extensive eco-system-based multiple species plans in the country.

The plan strengthens policies adopted in the early 1990s that were designed to protect the desert tortoise. The county was commended by the federal government for saving the desert tortoise while keeping the economy healthy by allowing development.

The latest plan strives to allow the same protection of other species without interfering with growth.
