The UNLV golf team, which finished sixth at the NCAA Men's Golf Championships earlier this month, is ranked third in the nation in the final Golfweek/Sagarin College Golf Rankings.
The Rebels trailed 1999 national champion Georgia and Clemson in the final poll after being ranked No. 4 going into the NCAA finals. Georgia Tech and Arizona State rounded out the top five.
Two UNLV players, juniors Jeremy Anderson and Michael Kirk, were ranked 11th and 12th, respectively, in the final men's collegiate individual rankings. Anderson finished tied for 16th in the individual standings at the NCAA Championships while Kirk tied for 57th.
Luke Donald of Northwestern, who captured the individual medalist honors at the NCAA finals, finished No. 1 in the individual rankings, followed by Joel Kribel of Stanford and James McLean of Minnesota, the 1998 NCAA individual champion.
Former Bonanza High standout Billy Harvey of BYU was 42nd in the final individual rankings.
In the women's rankings, Duke finished No. 1 in the final poll, followed by Georgia, Arizona, Tulsa and Arizona State.
Former Cimarron-Memorial High standout Stephanie Keever of Stanford was ninth in the final women's individual rankings.
* PACIFIC AMATEUR: The third annual Northwest Dodge Dealers Pacific Amateur Golf Classic will be held Oct. 3-7 on eight Central Oregon golf courses.
Open to any amateur golfer with an established USGA handicap, the Pacific Amateur holds competition in four divisions: Men, Women, Men's Senior (ages 55 and older), and Men's Super Senior (65 and older).
Players will be assigned to flights based on their handicaps and will play the three-day tournament on a different course each day. On the fourth day, flight finalists -- the top three cumulative low-net finishers in each flight -- will compete in the Finalists Playoff at Sunriver Resort's Crosswater Club.
The entry fee for the tournament is $375 and includes three days of golf and admission, with a guest, to all 19th Hole festivities which feature food, drink, entertainment and golf skills contests.
