Pitching fails Stars again in 10-4 loss to Tucson

TUCSON -- Pitching woes continued for the Las Vegas Stars on Wednesday night as they dropped a 10-4 decision to the Tucson Sidewinders at Tucson Electric Park.
Tucson amassed 17 more hits and made it three straight games that Las Vegas has given up double digits in runs. The Stars have surrendered 52 runs and 65 hits in their last three games.
Leftfielder Ernie Young led Tucson's offensive assault with a three-run homer off Las Vegas starter Bryan Wolff (5-5), who gave up 14 hits and six runs in six innings. Young also had an RBI triple, walked three more times and scored five runs.
Center fielder Chris Prieto had four hits and scored twice for the Stars (31-29). First baseman Carlos Garcia and catcher Ben Davis each reached base four times in the contest.
The series continues tonight at 7:35 with lefty Roberto Rivera (0-0, 6.23 ERA) starting for the Stars against Tucson right-hander Dave Tuttle (0-1, 6.20). The game will be shown on Cox cable channel 14.
* STARS NOTES: A MRI on the sore shoulder of Stars reliever Jeff Darwin showed a partially torn rotator cuff, a potentially career-ending injury for the right-hander. Darwin plans to try to rehab the injury without undergoing surgery. ...
The Padres are expected to activate Tony Gwynn off the disabled list today which means either Mike Darr or Gary Matthews Jr. will likely be sent back to Las Vegas. ...
Stars' starter Brian Tollberg may have to undergo "Tommy John Surgery" after it was discovered he has a torn ligament in his right (throwing) elbow. Tollberg is seeking a second opinion before making a decision whether to undergo surgery.
