Fishing report—June 10, 1999

* LAKE MEAD: Striped bass are being seen on the lake's surface as they feed on larval threadfin shad that are now being produced from this year's spawn.

Shad, a small bait fish, are the primary food source for striped bass and other game fish. Shad are currently spawning and their offspring are microscopic in size. Stripers are slurping on the lake's surface as they consume the fish.

With stripers becoming active, anglers have had success at Hemenway Harbor, the Pyramid Island causeway, Government Wash and Las Vegas Wash below the campground. Boaters fishing farther up the lake have caught stripers at the Meadows, Rogers Bay, Iceberg Canyon and Devil's Cove.

Largemouth bass are being pulled from brush in coves and along cliff walls. The action for channel catfish has been good in coves in the morning and evening hours.

* LAKE MOHAVE: After several weeks of poor fishing, the action for striped bass has finally picked up, according to the Nevada Division of Wildlife. Over the weekend, most boaters managed to catch striped bass with a better success coming from Owl's Point north of Cottonwood Cove.

On June 5, a boater fishing for largemouth bass caught two rainbow trout while casting a grub in a cove south of Owl's Point. Both fish were 14 inches long and weighed one pound.

* EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR: Fishing has been excellent and should get even better because 5,000 rainbow trout are scheduled to be stocked today by the Nevada Division of Wildlife. This will be the fifth and final plant of the spring season at the Lincoln County reservoir.

* ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR: Children should find good trout fishing for Saturday morning's Free Fishing Day clinic and derby because of recent stocking. No reservations are required.
