Letter: Media to blame for proliferation of school shootings
Wednesday, June 9, 1999 | 9:31 a.m.
Kids are going to school with guns and slaughtering their peers.
Everyone is appalled by such goings-on.
How does everyone know about these killings?
As soon as they happen, the media splashes them on every news source available: television, radio, newspapers, etc.
Never mind that these children have easy access to all these weapons.
Some misguided, unpopular children know that if they do a shooting they will instantly be famous (or infamous).
It seems most people in the media wait on pins and needles for the next school shooting and salivate when it happens.
They can't wait to drag out all the gory details of victims who survive such carnage.
Also the perpetrators, if they survive, are inundated with media attention.
So let me pose this question: Who is to blame?
And would the carnage stop if these killings were not publicized?
