Police get ID on victim

A 25-year-old man killed in what police are calling a drive-by shooting Sunday night has been identified as Howard Reed of Las Vegas.

Reed was shot when gunmen opened fire on a vehicle on Rancho Drive north of Washington Avenue, police said.

Reed was believed to be one of two people riding in the brown Cadillac at 6:35 p.m. Sunday when police received several calls from citizens on cell phones reporting shots fired, Sgt. Kevin Manning said.

The victim was transported in the Cadillac to University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Police still have no suspects or motive in the shooting, Manning said.

Police responding to the area found more than 20 cartridge casings in the roadway. A neighbor reported hearing gunshots and seeing a black Oldsmobile turn west onto Riverside Drive, hitting a light pole.

Witnesses also reported seeing a black Ford Bronco, Manning said.

Police are encouraging people with information on this crime to call Secret Witness at 385-5555 or Metro Homicide at 229-3521.

Tourist killed crossing Tropicana

A woman visiting Las Vegas was struck by a limousine and killed Tuesday night as she attempted to cross against traffic on Tropicana Avenue near the Strip, Metro Police said.

The victim, whose name was not released until relatives can be notified, was running south across Tropicana at Island Way outside the crosswalk at 9:25 p.m., police said. The victim appeared to be staying in a nearby hotel.

She was attempting to cross against the Don't Walk signal when a Cadillac limousine traveling eastbound in the right lane of Tropicana struck her, police said.

Police said that the driver of the limousine was not at fault, but the accident remains under investigation.

This was the 42nd traffic-related death in Las Vegas for 1999 compared with 49 this time last year, Detective Doug Nutton said.

Suspects sought in brother's death

Police are working to identify the suspects involved in the shooting death of Las Vegan David Ramirez Jr., 24, who was shot and killed Thursday while walking with two of his brothers in an alley behind Mallard Street near north Jones Boulevard and Smoke Ranch Road, Metro Police Homicide Sgt. Kevin Manning said.

Ramirez and his two brothers were walking down the alley when they were confronted by two or three men, Metro Police said. At least one of the men shot at them, a police spokesman said.

Ramirez managed to walk out of the alley before collapsing on Eugene Avenue, police said.

Police are looking for a man wearing an orange and blue shirt and blue jeans in connection with the shooting.

Police still have no clear motive for the shooting, Metro Homicide Lt. Wayne Petersen said.

LV man admits to killing woman

GALESBURG, Ill. -- Clyde Best chose to avoid a trial by admitting he beat a fellow Knox College student to death with a brick. He could end up spending his life in prison.

Best, of Las Vegas, pleaded guilty but mentally ill Monday to the 1998 murder of 19-year-old Andrea E. Racibozynski of Naperville, Ill. The plea leaves Best vulnerable to the same penalties a guilty plea would have.

Racibozynski was found March 29, 1998, at the bottom of a stairwell in Best's college dormitory shortly after she and Best were seen leaving a fraternity party. She had been beaten in the head with a brick and died soon afterward.

Best is scheduled to be sentenced Sept. 1 after an examination to ensure he is mentally competent.METH LABHenderson police

Blaze at bar seen as suspicious

Fire investigators are looking into a suspicious fire at Player's Lounge, 3510 Cambridge St., that destroyed several gaming machines and caused $125,000 in damage Monday, fire department spokesman Bob Leinbach said.

Six units and two dozen firefighters responded to the call at 6:30 a.m. and extinguished the blaze in 15 minutes, department spokesman Steve La-Sky said.

The bar, near Flamingo Road and Maryland Parkway, was open and serving customers when the fire broke out, La-Sky said.

A fire captain on the scene exited the bar complaining of chest pains, La-Sky said. The captain, who does not want to be identified, was transported to University Medical Center, where he was held overnight for observation.
