Artist to be honored at park project dedication

Local artist Lori Ann Fratianno will be honored by the Las Vegas Arts Commission at the dedication of her Bunker Park Beautification Project at 10 a.m. Friday at W. Wayne Bunker Family Park, Alexander Road and North Tenaya Way.

Activities scheduled are more than reading books

Clark County libraries are holding a variety of special programs. Call ahead to find out which programs require pre-registration.

Quill and Scroll: Teens can learn about calligraphy, making signs and graphic design at 1 p.m. Thursday at the West Las Vegas Library, 951 W. Lake Mead Blvd.

Trouble In Oz: All ages can enjoy this musical performance and will have the opportunity to interact with the cast after the 6 p.m. performance Friday at the Clark County Library, 1401 E. Flamingo Road.

Teen Beauty and Style Tricks: Ages 13 and older can stop in for free manicures, braiding tricks and cosmetic makeovers by Ulta Consultants from 1-3 p.m. Friday at the Whitney Library, 5175 E. Tropicana Ave.

Arts-y Film Festival: All ages are invited to enjoy arts-y films in the Nickelodeon Theater at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday and school age children can enjoy musical stories at 2 p.m. Wednesday. Both programs will be held at the West Charleston Library, 6301 W. Charleston Blvd.

Tracy The Storytelling Lady: Youngsters 18-36 months can enjoy Tracy with her unique props as she visits the farm at 10 a.m. and 3- to 5-year-olds can enjoy Little Red Hen and Freddy the Field Mouse at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Spring Valley Library, 4280 S. Jones Blvd.

Free screening scheduled at Summerlin Quick Care

University Medical Center's Silver Advantage program is offering a free cholesterol screening 8-9:30 a.m. June 16 at the UMC Summerlin Quick Care, 2031 N. Buffalo Drive.

Participants may eat a light breakfast and take their medications. To schedule an appointment, call the UMC Silver Advantage office at 383-2095.

Counseling service offers repair class

A credit repair class is being offered 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Consumer Credit Counseling Service, 3650 S. Decatur Blvd., Suite 32.

Those attending will receive a copy of their personal credit history and learn how creditors interpret the information it reveals.

Class fee is $20 per individual or $30 per couple. Class fee and pre-registration is due two days in advance. Call 364-0344.

Henderson Symphony to perform Friday

The Henderson Civic Symphony will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Civic Plaza Amphitheater, 200 Water St.

The free event is part of the "Twilight in the Plaza" concert series sponsored by the Henderson Parks and Recreation Department. Call 565-2367.

Women, heart disease conference on Saturday

The American Heart Association with Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center is hosting the third annual Women and Heart Disease Conference from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at the Rio hotel-casino showroom.

Physicians will teach participants about the potential heart health risks facing women. Continuing education credits are available for nurses, pharmacists and registered dietitians. Call 367-1366.

Henderson plans three programs for families

The Henderson Parks and Recreation Department is hosting "Family Fun Swimming Night" at three locations in June.

The events will be held 6:30-9 p.m. at all locations: June 12 at BMI Outdoor Pool, 105 W. Basic Road; June 18 at Wells Park Pool; and June 19 at Silver Springs Pool, 1951 Silver Springs Parkway. Call 565-2123.

Several hikes, other programs this weekend

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area offers hikes and walks free of charge, but reservations are required for all programs, which begin at the Visitor's Center.

Some coming programs:

People, Water and the Spanish Trail: This is a 4-mile moderate roundtrip hike that explores the history of water, native peoples and the early settlers who came through on the Spanish Trail.

Icebox Afternoon: Explore the ethnobotany of this north-facing canyon in the afternoon shadows on this moderate hike Friday. Bring lots of water and a snack.

Tanks for the View: Travel through the heart of sandstone formations on this 3-mile moderately strenuous hike Friday.

Everything Under the Sun-Nature walk: Discover the flora and fauna of Red Rock. Discuss it as it is found on this 2-mile moderate hike Saturday.

Nature Notebook-Wildflower Sketching: Join in on this 2-mile moderate hike to Pine Creek Saturday and learn the life histories of wildflowers and how to sketch them.

Sandstone's Story: This is ancient sandstone country. Follow its formation and explore its twisting canyons on a 3-mile trail to the Calico Tanks Sunday.

Dale's Trail Geology: Explore along the base of the ancient swamps and Jurassic Sandstone to learn how Red Rock Canyon was formed on a 4-mile hike Sunday.

Early Bird Water: This is a 3-mile easy to moderate roundtrip hike that will discuss water of Red Rock Canyon.

Family activities planned with swimming

Guided hikes and informative talks are offered by the Lake Mead National Recreation Area free at the park's Alan Bible Visitor Center northeast of Boulder City.

Reservations are required for the guided hikes. Call 293-8990.
