Letter: Psychiatric drugs harming our kids
Tuesday, June 8, 1999 | 9:29 a.m.
In Mary Manning's June 4 article in the Sun, "Signs of violent behavior usually can be detected," she writes, "Why violence is becoming so prevalent in middle-class America is still a mystery."
Mary, take a look at these facts! Almost all of the recent school shooters had been on some psychiatric drug such as Ritalin, Prozac, Zoloft, etc.
These drugs are being handed out like aspirin by psychiatrists and doctors to whom? Middle-class America!
I no longer look to see if they were on a psychiatric drug, I look to see which drug. If you start to look, you see the same pattern.
Anger and hostility have been around since the beginning of man.
Random acts of mass murder have only begun to rear their ugly heads these past few years.
Also rearing its ugly head is an institution that claims to offer help, but at what price? And are they helping at all?
Actual statistics are very low on actual help, but very big on profits.
The goal stated by the U.S. National Institute of Mental Health for the year 2000 is 10 million kids on Ritalin.
What kind of insane goal is that?
