Community news briefs for June 8, 1999

Tuesday, June 8, 1999 | 10:27 a.m.

Children enrolled in the county Parks and Recreation Department's Summer Fun program will get a free breakfast and lunch, thanks to a grant provided by the Department of Agriculture.

The Nevada Department of Education and Health's Summer Food Service Program will run from through Aug. 27 at Paradise Community Center, 4770 S. Harrison Drive; Whitney Community Center, 5700 E. Missouri Ave.; and Von Tobel Community Center, 3610 E. Carey Ave.

Tots' playground improvements planned

Clark County's Child Haven will use a $25,000 award to improve playground conditions at the Beazer Cottage, which houses toddlers ages 2-4.

The grant, from the Las Vegas Founders Club Golf Foundation, will be used to purchase and install a specialized play surface known as Tot Turf.

The surface is designed to reduce the possibility of playground mishaps such as falls, skinned knees and head injuries.

Neighborhood impact nominations are due

Clark County will be accepting nominations for the 1999 Southern Nevada Neighborhood Impact Awards until 5 p.m. Friday.

The award was established to recognize citizens, businesses and groups involved in grass-roots projects designed to improve a targeted neighborhood. The projects may focus on areas such as arts and cultural activities, social service, beautification, education, youths, conservation, economic development, restoration, housing, neighborhood improvement, health, environment or safety.

The awards will be announced at a luncheon during the Neighborhood Congress June 26. Applications for the award are available at the Clark County Government Center, 500 Grand Central Parkway, sixth floor, or may be downloaded off the website (co.clark.nv.us).
