Coast gaming win jumps 43 percent

Thursday, June 3, 1999 | 11:11 a.m.

BILOXI, Miss. -- The Mississippi Tax Commission reported the gambling win at the dozen Coast resorts hit $92.2 million in April, up 43 percent from April 1998.

Officials attributed the increase to the opening of Mirage Resorts' Beau Rivage resort and new passenger air service into Gulfport-Biloxi Regional Airport.

Beverly Martin, executive director of the Mississippi Casino Operators Association, attributed the increase to extensive pre-opening marketing by Beau Rivage and the extra passengers coming into the airport.

"It takes awhile for these programs to pay off, and it looks like we're just beginning to see the results," Martin told the Sun Herald newspaper.

"We're up over last year, and the last two months have been strong for us," Tim Hinkley told the Sun Herald. Hinkley is senior vice president of operations for Isle of Capri, owner of the Isle of Capri Casino Crowne Plaza Resort.
