Public invited to comment on rate hike request

Wednesday, June 2, 1999 | 11:33 a.m.

The Nevada Public Utilities Commission plans to hold a public hearing on Sprint's proposed telephone rate hike Thursday afternoon.

The hearing will begin at 4 p.m. in Room 101 at Cashman Field, 850 Las Vegas Blvd. South. PUC Chairwoman Judy Sheldrew is scheduled to attend.

In February, Sprint asked for regulatory permission to raise basic residential rates in Southern Nevada. In Las Vegas, residential rates would rise from $7.10 to $11 per month, a 55 percent increase. Business rates would rise from $16.30 to $20 per month, a 23 percent hike.

Sprint hopes to raise an additional $30 million per year through the hike, which it says is necessary to finance the growth of the area's infrastructure.

All Sprint customers are invited to comment on the proposal or the quality of Sprint service. The commission said it will accept written comments from those who cannot attend.
