Letter: Low morals root of kids’ problems

Wednesday, June 2, 1999 | 12:11 p.m.

What kind of children are we raising? The kids who are doing the shooting are from unhealthy homes in upper-middle class areas. Poverty or the need of material things are not their problem. What are they trying to tell us? Could their problems be in the homes, church, schools or society in general?

We have had guns around for years, violence on TV for many years. Yet we did not have babies killing babies. Boys years ago would settle their differences with their fists, not guns. Are we as a nation becoming too materialistic in our thinking and our approach that we are neglecting our children? Strict gun control laws are not the only answer. Less TV is not the only answer.

Our kids see that the moral standards in society are very low. We're quite permissive. Nothing is wrong anymore. Just do what the majority of people are doing. This kind of thing affects them. They look around them and say "What's the use?" They see duplicity in the lives of adults.

In some states more prisons are being built than schools. Maybe our problem is our misplaced priorities. Our youth should not be neglected, the future of our nation lies with them.
