Henderson: Council approves new park

Wednesday, June 2, 1999 | 11:15 a.m.

Henderson will soon be a little greener.

The City Council Tuesday unanimously approved an agreement with Mission Ridge LLC for the construction of a city park and recreation facilities on 20 acres near Horizon Ridge Parkway.

Horizon Ridge Park, which is being built as a condition of the developer's project approval, will be adjacent to the 384-unit Valley Vista Apartments in the MacDonald Ranch Planning Area.

Plans for the estimated $325,000 park call for ballfields, basketball courts, a tot lot, picnic areas and exercise/walking trails.

The council also awarded a contract for the 3-acre expansion of O'Callaghan Park to Lewis Landscape Design, despite protests from representatives of McComb Contracting Co., Inc. -- the fourth bidder -- which challenged the top three bidders on grounds their contractor license classifications were not appropriate for the project.

Lewis representatives convinced the council to reject protests filed by McComb and CEDCO Inc. to allow the company to update and expand one of the city's most popular parks for its bid of $581,650.

As part of the expansion, additional barbecues, shade structures, tables, chairs, sand volleyball pits and walking paths as well as new playground equipment will be built.
