State boys basketball champion Cimarron-Memorial didn't have to look far for its new head coach, with longtime assistant Mike Brascia earning the nod to replace Hank Girardi, who resigned recently.
Although this will be Brascia's first head basketball coaching position, he served a three-year stint as head football coach at Bishop Gorman from 1995-97 and has been an assistant basketball coach at both Gorman and Cimarron over the years.
"He's one of the best coaches in town," Girardi said. "He'll do a great job."
Brascia inherits a squad that won Cimarron's second state title last winter but loses top seniors Marcus Banks and Brian Lang to graduation.
"We lose the two big guns, but we've got some talent coming back," Brascia said. "I expect to have an easy transition."
In other Cimarron news, Girardi reported that Lang, a 6-2 all-state swingman, has signed to play at Mt. Hood Junior College in Gresham, Ore. Lang averaged 20 points and seven rebounds for the Spartans in his final season.
