Allen powers Stars past Albuquerque

ALBUQUERQUE -- Dusty Allen's three-run homer in the top of the ninth here Tuesday night looked like icing on the cake for what appeared to be a lopsided Las Vegas Stars victory.
Allen's home run, his second in as many days and his sixth of the season, capped a four-run ninth and gave the Stars a 10-1 lead.
But that insurance came in handy when Albuquerque erupted for five runs, including three homers, off reliever Carlos Almanzar in the bottom of the ninth of an eventual 10-6 loss to Las Vegas.
It was the third win in a row for the Stars (27-25), who conclude their eight-game road trip today at 11:05 a.m. here. Las Vegas returns home to host the Vancouver Canadians in a five-game series beginning with a Thursday night doubleheader at Cashman Field starting at 6:05 p.m.
Second baseman David Newhan, back from a week-long layoff because of a sprained ankle, hit his team-high 10th home run of the season and red-hot Aaron Guiel homered, doubled and scored three runs to lead the Stars offensively.
Starter Jose Mercedes (2-3) allowed just four hits and one runs in eight innings before giving way to Almanzar. He struck out eight and walked just one.
Shawn Boskie (3-6) took the loss for Albuquerque.
